Home Bar, Ewell

An outhouse at the end of the garden that could easily have stayed empty storage has instead been turned into a proper home bar. The room was built from the shell outward, with the joinery, lighting and finishes all planned together as one space. The brief was simple: make it somewhere worth spending an evening in, not just a shed with a bar in the corner.

Every piece of joinery in the room was built for it specifically. The panelling that runs across the walls and up onto the ceiling, the bar front, the shelving behind it: none of it is off the shelf, and it shows in the way the whole room reads as one continuous piece rather than a bar squeezed into a space that was never meant for it.

Mid-build: the bar carcass and lighting canopy in place, walls filled ready for decoration.
First fix: back-bar shelving up and the drinks fridge in position, the worktop under wraps.

The bar itself is topped in solid walnut, with a back bar behind it fitted with twin beer taps and a glass-fronted drinks fridge, so it works properly rather than just looking the part. A dartboard sits on its own wall opposite, and a banquette seating area runs along another, with a raised corner built in to rest a drink on and sockets fitted so you can charge a phone without getting up. A section of reclaimed timber, left with its natural rough edge, marks out where the bar begins and gives the room a bit of texture against all the built joinery around it.

The media wall in its first coat of deep navy, floors still under protection boards.
Ceiling speakers and downlights in, panelling stacked ready for fitting.
The darts corner taking shape: banquette bases built in, awaiting their upholstery.
The live-edge walnut counter, under-lit bar front and slatted media wall, looking out to the garden.

Farrow & Ball colours run through the room, a deep navy across the panelled walls and ceiling that feels calm rather than heavy in a room this size, set off against a playful cassette-tape print on the feature wall, a nod to the kind of room this is rather than a house trying to be serious about itself. The lighting runs on a Lutron system, so the room can be set to whatever the moment calls for: bright enough for a film, low and warm for drinks with friends, or opened right up for a summer barbecue.

The last piece of the job is the upholstery for the banquette. In the client's words:

I recently hired Fernings to do some work in my house and I would highly recommend them to anyone. I work from home so I was present whilst the works were being carried out. I was very impressed with the care and attention that Fernings puts into their work, they are very meticulous and it's obvious that they take great pride in ensuring all work is completed to a high standard and that the area they are working in is always kept clean and tidy. They were very polite and provided me with regular updates on how the work was progressing. I am overjoyed with the work and have already spoken with Fernings in regard to them taking on further works in my house in the new year.
